Mesothelioma may be a rare form of cancer but it is still cancer. The cancerous cells attack the mesothelium, which is the 2-layer membrane providing a protective sac around the internal organs like the heart, lungs and stomach. Since each organ's mesothelium has a name, mesothelioma is classified as pericardial mesothelioma (heart), pleural mesothelioma (lungs) and peritoneal mesothelioma (stomach). The symptoms, which take decades to manifest, will vary depending on the location of the cancer although pain is a common sign.
The deadly connection between asbestos and Lung Mesothelioma has been known since the 1920s with the medical community gathering stronger evidence by the 1930s and 1940s. Manufacturers continued to use asbestos instead of substituting the suggested alternative materials all because of the almighty bottom line - profits.
Mesothelioma - even its name can strike fear into the hearts of individuals. Indeed, all kinds of cancer have an adverse effect on the physical and psychological health of otherwise healthy individuals for the simple reason that cancer has treatments and therapies but no total cure. And so, when a definitive diagnosis of lung mesothelioma has been provided by medical doctors, it is understandable that anxiety, worry and anger are the first emotions to be experienced.
Cancer is always of great concern to the individuals diagnosed with the affliction and to their families and friends as well. Billions of dollars are poured into research for the prevention and treatment of the various types of cancers including cancer of the mesothelium, which is called mesothelioma. The silver lining in the dark clouds of Lung Mesothelioma is its relatively rare incidence, with 2,000 new cases diagnosed per year in the United States but with the increase in cases for the past 20 years, it is but a small silver lining.
